A group of students at Fairview Elementary in Maple Ridge celebrated Vaisakhi with their school.
Eight students, in Grades 2 to 6, dressed up in Punjabi suits and kurta pyjamas for the school’s May assembly.
They explained the meaning of Vaisakhi, the traditions associated with the holiday, and the connection to local farming.
Vaisakhi is celebrated by the Sikh community worldwide and traditionally it marked the beginning of the spring harvest. It also marks the founding of The Khalsa by Guru Gobind Singh, which, according to World Sikh Organization of Canada, happened in 1699. The Khalsa, explained the organization, are Sikhs who have accepted the Sikh initiation to commit to live their lives in the spirit of service to all, equality and compassion.
