November 16, 2023

Maple Ridge – Pitt Meadows School District is pleased to announce the appointment of Teresa Downs to the position of Superintendent of Schools and CEO, effective February 26, 2024.

“I know I speak on behalf of the whole board when I say how thrilled we are to have found a leader of such exceptional quality to guide our school district,” said Board Chairperson Elaine Yamamoto. “With her extensive experience at both local and provincial levels, Teresa Downs is uniquely qualified to advance and build upon our district’s established strategic priorities and goals.”

Coming from the Gold Trail School District, Teresa Downs brings twelve years of leadership experience as Superintendent of Schools. Her journey in education also includes roles as director of instruction, elementary school principal, and teacher in the same district. Downs currently serves as the president of the BC School Superintendents Association (BCSSA).

“I am honoured to join the Maple Ridge – Pitt Meadows School District as the new Superintendent and CEO,” Downs expressed. “The cornerstone of my educational approach is building and nurturing relationships with high expectations of student success. It’s about purposeful collaboration with our students, their families, rights-holders, and community partners to ensure that all students can thrive. As I step into this new role, I look forward to engaging with our talented educators, staff, and the broader community to continue cultivating learning environments that empower every student to reach their potential.”

In her provincial capacity, Downs has co-led the Management Standards Project with the Ministry of Education and Child Care, addressed rural education challenges as part of the Ministry’s Rural Task Force, and represented the BCSSA on various committees shaping educational policy. She holds a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of British Columbia and a Master of Education degree with a Certificate in School Management and Leadership from the University of Victoria.

“We are delighted to welcome Teresa Downs, whose leadership will enrich our district’s ongoing commitment to student success, inclusive and equitable education, and community engagement,” said Board Chairperson Elaine Yamamoto.
