Samuel Robertson Technical teacher-librarian Adria Schafer recommends The Fragments that Remain by Mackenzie Angeconeb for Pride Month.
This is a beautifully written book told through letters and poems about loss, first love, identity, and family by debut Anishinaabekwe author, Mackenzie Angeconeb.
Ally and Andy are inseparable siblings who have always shared everything — until Ally dies. A year later, Andy starts her first year at college, beginning a new chapter in her life without her brother. She writes letters to Ally as she navigates new friendships with people who know nothing about him, falls in love for the first time, and strives to embrace her bisexuality and her Indigenous identity.
Although heart-wrenching, the story also offers a sense of hope as Andy creates a new identity for herself without her brother by her side. When she discovers a collection of poems Ally hid in their room, she pieces together these remaining fragments to better understand her brother’s life — and his death.
This book is suitable for students at the secondary level.
The Fragments that Remain is available in SD42 libraries.
