Year-end letter from Superintendent Dhillon

June 29, 2023 2:00 PM

Dear families,

As summer break begins for most students, I want to take a moment to thank all students, staff, and families for another successful school year. The school year has ended for most of our students, with only Kanaka Creek Elementary remaining in session until July 26. For students registered in summer learning, classes will begin after the Canada Day long weekend, on Wednesday, July 5, 2023.

I am once again pleased to share with you our District Highlights magazine. This annual publication features a selection of some of the inspiring initiatives and events that have enriched our schools this year. I encourage you to flip through the pages and celebrate along with our school communities. Our magazine also includes a year-end message from Minister of Education and Child Care, Rachna Singh (click here to read this letter online).

Additionally, I would like to invite you to participate in the BC Demographic Survey. This survey aims to identify inequities in government services to ensure programs meet the needs of more people in British Columbia.

On a personal note, it is with mixed emotions that I share with you today my decision to retire at the end of spring break 2024. I have given the Board of Education notice of my decision well in advance of my intended retirement date to support a comprehensive search for the next superintendent of schools for Maple Ridge – Pitt Meadows School District No. 42. This process, which the board will conduct with the assistance of an executive search firm, will take place over the next three to four months. The board will cast a wide net, extending beyond our local boundaries, to attract a diverse range of highly qualified candidates. I have also assured the board that I am committed to supporting a positive and successful transition for the next superintendent.

In the meantime, I too look forward to a bit of a break this summer. I am sure this break will include much personal reflection on my 35 years of service in public education – a journey that began at Glenwood Elementary in 1988. We have much to be proud of in our school district, but there is more work ahead of us. I look forward to continuing this journey with you in the 2023/24 school year.

Wishing you refreshing and relaxing summer holidays,

Harry Dhillon
Superintendent of Schools
