Dear families,
Saturday’s devastating incident at the Lapu Lapu celebrations in Vancouver are understandably upsetting for adults and children alike. It is often hard to know how to reassure our children when we ourselves are striving to process and make sense of these losses. Children may experience a wide range of emotions in response to what they hear or see; it is important to remember that they will look to the adults in their lives to help them feel safe and to make sense of the world. As a parent or caregiver, you may feel unprepared to help your child understand and process these events. We are reaching out to share with you some strategies and resources that will help guide your conversations with your child with the understanding that people are going to be impacted in a variety of ways, based on age and development as well as their own involvement and connection to this terrible tragedy. ...read moreThe Maple Ridge – Pitt Meadows School District (SD42) is gathering input from students, staff, and families across the district on potential changes to secondary school schedules at individual schools.
Currently, all SD42 secondary schools follow a linear schedule, where students take up to eight classes throughout the full school year. Moving forward, some schools may continue with this model, while others may transition to a semester schedule, with up to four classes per semester and two semesters in a school year.
Any approved schedule changes would take effect in the 2026/27 school year.
We’ve launched separate surveys for:
All surveys are open until May 2, 2025 and can be accessed through the consultation webpage: sd42.ca/secondary-scheduling-engagement
View a summary of the potential benefits and challenges of each schedule model here: Linear vs. Semester: Schedule Comparison
Due to its Middle Years and International Baccalaureate (IB) programs, Garibaldi must continue with a linear schedule. As a result, GSS staff, students, and families will complete a different survey focused on identifying the supports and structures that will continue to strengthen success within the existing model.
Student pop-up booths will take place during lunch hours at each secondary school to support participation. You can view the full timeline, including school dates, here: Download the Consultation Timeline
Translated versions of the survey questions and answers are available on the consultation web page (https://www.sd42.ca/secondary-scheduling-engagement/). These can be accessed using the built-in Google Translate feature in the top corner of the website.
Thank you for taking the time to share your input. Your feedback will help inform decisions that best support student learning and well-being.
