Dear parents/guardians,

As you may know, Global Climate Strike rallies are being held across North America this upcoming Friday, September 27. These rallies are timed to coincide with the United Nations Climate Action Summit in New York and are being organized online under the hashtag #FridaysForFuture.

In recent days, school districts have begun to acknowledge the likelihood of student participation in these rallies, and to formally offer their support for this call to action.

Here in the Maple Ridge – Pitt Meadows School District, personal and social responsibility is one of our key defining values. We are committed as a district to acting as responsible stewards within our community, and we seek to develop the leadership and citizenship capacity of all learners. (more…)

The use of vaping products by youth and young adults is on the rise. To help parents have informed conversations with their children about the health risks of vaping, Fraser Health, BC Lung Association and Vancouver Coastal Health have created a package of resources and information.

You can download the Vaping Prevention Toolkit free from the BC Lung Association. The toolkit includes a Vaping Product Education for Parents Guide.

The guide includes tips on how to start conversations with youth, potential questions that parents may be asked by their child, and responses to each question.

In addition to this new toolkit, Fraser Health has online resources on these topics for parents at Fraserhealth.ca:

• Vaping products
• Tobacco and youth
• Smoking and youth oral health
• Substance use in children and youth
• Cannabis

Maple Ridge – Pitt Meadows School District No. 42 has developed a School Safety Notification System in collaboration with Ridge Meadows RCMP to keep students, staff and volunteers safe. While it is impossible to anticipate all eventualities, the notifications below are used as a guide to conduct these procedures effectively. (more…)

The opening of c̓əsqənelə Elementary will be delayed until September 25, 2019 to allow time for thorough testing of the new building’s mechanical systems. A short-term contingency plan is in place that will ensure the learning needs of all students are met and that disruptions for families are minimized. The Maple Ridge – Pitt Meadows School District has been advised that the Ministry of Education has now resolved the issue with student assessment marks and the revised student transcripts will be posted online today (July 31, 2019). (more…)

Press release: Ministry of Mental Health and Addictions

Students in the Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows School District will have a clearer, easier-to-understand path to mental health and substance use services.

A “one care plan” approach is a new service delivery model being introduced in their school district.

Integrated teams will work closely with school and team-based primary care and specialized services providers to offer wraparound care to children, youth and their families. This means individuals experiencing mental health and substance use challenges and their families will no longer need to retell their stories to different care providers or search on their own for the supports they need. 

“For too many years, a fragmented and unco-ordinated system of care has left many families struggling to find the right mental health and addiction supports for their children before things reach a crisis point,” said Judy Darcy, Minister of Mental Health and Addictions. “Integrated child and youth teams are one way we are making it easier to connect children and youth to the right care, where and when they need it at school and in the community.”  (more…)

It’s the last day of school for most students in Maple Ridge – Pitt Meadows School District, so we wanted to say congratulations to our entire school community on another memorable year of learning, sharing and growing.

All parent/guardian and student MyClass accounts for MyEducationBC are set to expire on July 31, 2019 to allow for end of the year rollover and school scheduling. Students and parents/guardians will be unable to access their accounts during this time.

The reactivation of student and parent/guardian MyClass accounts for the 2019/20 school year will take place on the following dates:

• Students in grades 8-12: Friday, August 30, 2019 at 3pm
• Students in grades K-7: Wednesday, September 11, 2019 at 3pm
• All parent/guardian accounts: Wednesday, September 11, 2019 at 3pm

This is a reminder that the Wednesday, June 19, 2019 public meeting of the board will start at 1 pm so that trustees can attend graduation ceremonies later in the day. The meeting will take place at the District Education Office, 22225 Brown Avenue, Maple Ridge.

The BC government has approved the Vaccination Status Reporting Regulation requiring parents or guardians to report the vaccination status of their school-age children. This regulation comes into force on July 1 and public health units will begin implementation of the regulation in September of 2019. (more…)
