Dear families,

Current events in Canada and the United States remind us of the work that must be done to make our society and our school district open, safe, inclusive and responsive – places where all can learn, thrive and lead dignified lives. The death of George Floyd and the subsequent Black Lives Matter protests include an unparalleled and broad cross-section of American and Canadian citizens who have, with peaceful protest, signaled the need for change. One of the most heartening observations that I make of the protests is the overwhelming involvement of young people, who have delivered a compelling message: the time for quiet support is now past. Through careful evidence-based planning by public health experts and in accordance with BC’s Restart Plan, students can voluntarily return to school on a part-time basis starting June 1, 2020. Dear 2020 graduating class families,

We are certainly sharing a very unusual time with you and finding meaningful and safe ways to celebrate our graduating classes of 2020 this June is challenging.

For most graduates, it is the chance to toss their mortar boards high into the air with their classmates or to take group pictures with their friends and loved ones in their caps and gowns that makes commencement meaningful. For staff, families and friends, it is the coming together of the class to recognize their achievements that makes commencement special. (more…)

As we reopen, however, the organization of our schools will look different than it did before COVID-19. Our focus over the next few weeks will be on continuing to ensure that all appropriate health and safety measures are in place to protect our students and staff as they return to some in-classroom instruction.
