Garibaldi Secondary teacher librarian Emma Daignault recommends A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini for International Women’s Day.
A Thousand Splendid Suns is a powerful novel by Khaled Hosseini that captures the strength and resilience of two women set against the backdrop of three volatile decades in Afghanistan. The story follows Mariam and Laila, two women from different generations whose stories intertwine as they navigate violence, fear, hope, and faith through conflict and political upheaval. Their bravery and resilience illustrate how love and sacrifice can become acts of resistance in the face of political oppression.
This story eloquently encapsulates a woman’s experience during wartime as these characters struggle to survive, raise a family, and find moments of happiness while dealing with the turbulent history unfolding around them.
The vast experience of women and womanhood has always been a significant interest to me and that is one of the many reasons this is one of my favourite books. I would highly recommend this novel, especially for International Women’s Day, for anyone looking for a read centred on women’s determination and strength.
