Artificial Intelligence in SD42 – Update and Next Steps

May 22, 2026 3:34 PM

Over the past year, our school district has been learning about artificial intelligence (AI) – what it is, how it is being used in the world, and how it may support teaching and learning in our schools.

This work has been guided by a clear belief: AI is a tool that can support learning, but it does not replace the important role of teachers, relationships, and human judgment.

We have taken time this year to explore AI carefully, provide learning opportunities for staff, and better understand how to move forward in a way that reflects our values of equity, safety, and student well-being.

Looking Ahead to 2026–2027

As we move into next year, we will take small, measured steps in introducing AI in our schools. Students in Grades 9-12 will have access to the education version of Microsoft Copilot, at the discretion of their teachers. This tool is:

  • Designed for learning environments
  • Not monetized
  • Compliant with BC’s privacy laws (FIPPA)

Our Approach

AI is increasingly part of our world, and as a school district we have a responsibility to help students understand how it works, use it ethically and responsibly, and think critically about the information it provides

At the same time, we are mindful of the growing body of research on the impacts of screen time on children and youth. We will be engaging in focused learning and dialogue about the purposeful use of technology in our schools, particularly in the elementary years, by asking when, why, and how digital tools best support student learning and well-being. This means ensuring that technology use is intentional, developmentally appropriate, and aligned with our commitment to balanced, healthy learning environments.

We also recognize that this is new and evolving for all of us. We are committed to moving forward carefully, learning as we go, and keeping student safety, privacy, and well-being at the centre of our decisions. We will continue to share updates as this work evolves and welcome your questions and feedback as we take these next steps together.

Sincerely,

Teresa Downs
Superintendent of Schools
