GSS Interdisciplinary Arts Academy holding auditions

The Garibaldi Interdisciplinary Arts Academy is holding cast and crew auditions for its upcoming production of Aladdin.

Auditions are open to all Maple Ridge – Pitt Meadows School District No. 42 students who have an interest in theatre production.

“We are looking for actors, dancers and singers. And because we have a fully functional theatre at Garibaldi, we also have all production positions available – stage managing, associate choreographers, associate directors, lights, sound, special effects, all of it,” explained Cyndy Lacroix, artistic director.

Students with acting and production roles in the musical can receive up to 12 secondary school course credits.

Lacroix said she chose Aladdin because “it’s magical.”

She noted the elaborate Aladdin set will span 66 feet, floor to ceiling, in the school theatre and the show will contain many special effects.

“I have so many students who want to learn production, which means I needed to give them a piece of work that is very demanding. It gives kids an opportunity to do something amazing,” she added.
The Interdisciplinary Arts Academy at Garibaldi secondary allows students to pursue an education in theatre and explore career opportunities in theatre, dance, voice, film and television.

During the program, which runs from September to December, students receive visits from industry professionals who provide hands-on workshops on every aspect of staging a production. Graduates of the Garibaldi program have gone on to pursue careers in theatre, dance, voice, film, television and music.

“I don’t think there’s an aspect of theatre I don’t have kids involved in,” said Lacroix.

Audition Details

Auditions for actors take place on June 4 between 6-9 pm. Students who do not attend Garibaldi secondary must email fri2859@telus.net to book a time slot.

Each audition lasts 20 minutes and students must prepare a one-minute song from any musical and a 30-second monologue (those without a prepared  monologue will be asked to perform a cold read with a stage manager).

“It’s pretty low key once you get here, don’t be nervous,” said Lacroix. “I’ve been doing this forever and I’m just there to bring out the best in them. It’s a very supportive environment.”

Students interested in positions for set painting, costume sewing, running crew, light and sound technician, marketing, film and editing work can email Lacroix at clacroix@sd42.ca
