Frequently Asked Questions: Secondary Schedule Consultation

Frequently Asked Questions: Secondary Schedule Consultation

The Maple Ridge – Pitt Meadows School District (SD42) engaged students, staff, and families in a district-wide consultation to help determine whether individual secondary schools should remain on a linear schedule or transition to a semester schedule.

The questions and answers below provide additional context about the process, timelines, and how the input received will be used to inform decisions.

What was this consultation about?

The Maple Ridge – Pitt Meadows School District (SD42) was exploring whether individual secondary schools should continue with a linear schedule or move to a semester schedule. The consultation gathered input from students, staff, and families to help inform school-specific decisions.

Why did the district explore changes to the secondary schedule now?

During the COVID-19 pandemic, SD42 secondary schools temporarily shifted away from the traditional linear model. In 2020/21, schools adopted a quarter system, and in 2021/22 and 2022/23, they moved to a semester schedule to provide greater flexibility and support health and safety measures.

In 2023/24, schools returned to the linear schedule, with a commitment from the district to gather input from students, staff, and families about which model best supports student learning and well-being moving forward.

This consultation fulfilled that commitment by seeking input on whether each school should continue with a linear model or transition to a semester model.

What’s the difference between a linear and a semester schedule?
  • Linear schedule: Students take up to eight classes throughout the full school year.
  • Semester schedule: Students take up to four classes per semester, with two semesters in a school year.

A side-by-side comparison of each model’s potential benefits and challenges is available here: Linear vs. Semester: Schedule Comparison Chart (PDF)

Who was consulted?

Separate surveys were developed for:

  • Secondary students
  • Secondary staff
  • Families of secondary students
  • Garibaldi Secondary School students, staff, and families (see below)
Why did Garibaldi Secondary have a different survey?

Due to its Middle Years and International Baccalaureate (IB) programs, Garibaldi Secondary must continue with a linear schedule.

Instead of choosing between models, the Garibaldi survey focuses on identifying the supports and structures that will continue to strengthen student success within the existing model.

When did the consultation take place?

The surveys were open from April 14 to May 2, 2025.
Pop-up booths were also held in schools from April 15 to May 1 to support student participation.

How will decisions be made?

A working group — with representation from secondary administration, Indigenous education, learning services, human resources, safe and caring schools, and communications — will review all input and develop school-specific recommendations.
These recommendations will be based on:

  • Manageable student workload
  • Manageable staff workload
  • Support for student success
  • Support for positive connections
  • Responsiveness to diverse learning needs

The superintendent will consider these recommendations before making final decisions for each school.

When would any changes take effect?

If a school transitions to a semester schedule, changes would take effect in the 2026/27 school year.
