September 2017 Entry for The Wheelhouse @ Alouette

The Wheelhouse at Alouette Elementary will soon be accepting registrations for its 5th year as a district choice program in elementary. The Wheelhouse program is proud to be a student-centred learning environment with a strong focus on community engagement, developing leadership, and nurturing individual curiosity.

The Wheelhouse is a classroom in which students are both challenged and supported in becoming life-long learners and responsible citizens. Students in this program take action in their community, develop greater self-confidence, and have a strong sense of care for their classmates and school.

In The Wheelhouse, everyone is encouraged to work hard, ask questions, share experiences, take risks and learn from mistakes along the way. With teacher and mentor support, students create a learning community in which all students respect and cherish each other, and support their peers to be the best individuals they can be.

Highlights of the program include:

  • Weekly Field Study Days where students learn outside the regular class setting;
  • A classroom of care and discovery that is well supported by caring staff, parents and community mentors;
  • Leadership activities that improve confidence, citizenship, and social responsibility;
  • Wheelhouse students are also part of the District 1-to-1 program, where each student is assigned an iPad for personal use throughout the school year.

You are invited to attend one of two upcoming Information Sessions:

Tuesday, February 28 from 6:00-7:00pm at Alouette Elementary
Thursday, March 2 from 6:00-7:00 at Alouette Elementary

This program option is open to all students in School District 42 who will be going into Grades 6 and 7 in September 2017, and who are a good “fit” for this style of learning.

The Wheelhouse is a unique program, and it is important for your entire family to consider the choice carefully for your student. Please visit our online materials to determine if this is indeed a good “fit”.
