District Technology Projects:
 

1 to 1 Laptop Program

  • The One-to-One Laptop Program is in its fourth year of a four year pilot project. The original intent of the project was to determine the impact of laptops on students' writing performance. In addition to improving writing performance, we have found that the laptops make it easier for a wide range of students to be successful, and easier for teachers to meet the needs of all students in the classroom while better preparing students for their future. 
  • There are seventeen classes of grade 6 and 7 students in the Laptop Project. Each student receives an Apple laptop to keep from late September to June. Parent meetings are held at each school in September, and students receive their laptops after signing acceptable use and basic care agreements.

SMART Boards

  • SD42 is currently piloting 8 SMART interactive whiteboards throughout the district. The classrooms include: one primary, four intermediate, two secondary, and one elementary computer lab. A SmartBoard is a large, touch-controlled screen that works with a projector and a computer. The projector puts the computer’s desktop image onto the interactive whiteboard. Both teacher and students can write on the interactive whiteboard in digital ink or use a finger to control computer applications by pointing, clicking and dragging, just as with a desktop mouse.
  • Starting in the Spring of 2009, there will be 16 SmartBoards placed as phase II of our pilot. In each school a pair of SmartBoards will be placed with either primary or intermediate teachers. The pairing of teachers will allow for increased support and collaboration as they learn to utilize SmartBoards in their classrooms. Training and support for effective use of SmartBoards will be provided. The SmartBoards will be placed in the following schools:

The SRT Tablet Project

  • A tablet is a laptop computer that allows the teacher to take notes using natural handwriting with a stylus. The teacher demonstrations are then projected onto a screen for students to view. The benefit of teaching with a tablet is that the teacher and student demonstrations are then able to be saved and posted onto a school website for students to review from home. Students who missed a class or need further help understanding a concept can review the lesson, with teacher diagrams, explanation as well as audio and questions from the class.
