Program Characteristics
The focus is on moving the student forward from where they are behaviourally, emotionally, and academically. The order of these three components is significant in that without addressing the first two there is little success addressing academic needs. The approach used is similar to an elementary classroom environment where the students stay with one teacher for their entire day.
• Focus on social responsibility and social skill development
• Belief that all behaviour has meaning and that children and youth do well if they can
• Smaller class sizes and high adult: student ratio
• Child and Youth Care Worker, Drug and Alcohol Counselor, & PLEA worker (for youth currently on probation)
• High degree of parent participation
• Parenting workshops
• Individualized programming (e.g., modified, adapted) and integrated high interest curriculum
• Work experience/trades training opportunities
Characteristics of students for which the program is intended
The GMYCEO Program enrolls students who are not attending/not registered in a regular school. Services will be provided until the youth is able to transition to a long-term program.
Age/grade requirements
The program is geared toward students aged 15 through 18 years. Older and younger students are considered on an individual basis. Most students are on an individualized program and so they may or may not be working at grade level.
Registration proces
Referrals are made through the Keeping Kids in School Team or youth self-refer at the Greg Moore Youth Centre site.
Location
Greg Moore Youth Centre,
Haney Place Mall, Maple Ridge
Schedule//starting dates
The GMYCEO program runs from 11:30 until 2:00 Monday through Thursday. Students attend as much as they are able (i.e., some students attend from 11:30 until 2:00 five days/week, whereas others attend for 2 hours/week or less). When a student’s emotional status makes it impossible for them to attend the GMYC, a teacher or child and youth care worker meets with students at their home or at some other non-traditional location.
