#YourPathSD42: Masonry (Bricklaying)

Did you know that you can start to build a solid career in the trades while still attending high school?

The Masonry program offered by the Maple Ridge – Pitt Meadows School District (SD42), in partnership with Kwantlen Polytechnic University, provides an opportunity for students to complete Grade 12 graduation requirements while earning post-secondary credits and certification in the masonry field.

Graduates of the five-month program earn Level 1 Masonry Apprenticeship certification without paying any tuition fees – which amounts to a savings of approximately $2,700.

Once students successfully complete this course they can immediately start seeking employment as Level 1 apprentices, continue their Level 2 apprenticeship training at Kwantlen or pursue other post-secondary education opportunities.

“It gives students an opportunity to see if they like working in the trade,” said instructor Tim Brotherston. “It’s a pretty real-life working situation.”

Most mornings are devoted to basic theory work while the rest of the day is spent getting hands-on experience, from mixing and spreading mortar to cutting and laying bricks.

During the course, students will develop the necessary habits concerning safety and the proper use of time, tools, materials, and the work skills required to be a successful tradesperson.

Brotherston said a career in masonry appeals to those who would prefer working outside rather than being stuck inside an office or always working at the same site.

“You have to be ready to go out there and fight the elements to get the job done and that appeals to certain people,” said Brotherston.

The average hourly wage for a bricklayer working in British Columbia is approximately $30 or higher.

“The last year or so the masonry companies are having trouble finding good people,” said Brotherston. “If you’ve got some theory and practical skill that’s what they are looking for. And there’s always the opportunity, after a while, of starting your own business.”
