Science Alive

Science Alive is a not-for-profit science education program based out of Simon Fraser University. Our workshops cover theories and applications of science through hands-on activities, experiments, and demonstrations. All workshops are two-hours long and are developed to meet the 2005 Prescribed Learning Outcomes for grade 2 to 7. This year's topics are: Radical Reactions (chemistry and the scientific method), The Human Machine (topics include kinesiology, forces, and human body systems), Power Up-The Science of Electricity and Energy (electricity and alternative energy sources), and Forces of Nature weather and climate change). Workshops are available May 18th to June 18th, 2010.

A symposium held Saturday, April 10 from 8:30 - 12:30 at New Westminster Secondary School Library (821 - 8th Street). The topics include (1) School-based Threat Assessment (2) Trends in Internet Technology (3) Progressive School-Police Partnerships and (4) Innovative Surrey Safe School Programs and Initiatives. Presentation of the BC Woman of Wisdom and Passion Award at 12:00 noon. Guest speaker for the symposium is Theresa Campbell, Manager of Safe Schools of the Surrey School District and a recognized national and international expert of School Safety. In concert with the R.C.M.P., Theresa has developed comprehensive, multi-disciplinary tools and programs that address substance use, violence, gangs, bullying, and other issues. She is a representative on municipal, provincial and federal committees and has been recognized for her work by all three levels of Canadian government. Ms Campbell is a certified trainer in Incident Command, Critical Incident Response and is a certified trainer and consultant in Threat Assessment working with the Canadian Centre for Threat Assessment and Trauma Response. In 2007 Theresa received the National Crime Preventen Center award for innovation and creativity in crime prevention. In 2008 she was awarded in the United States the prestigious Frederic Milton thrasher Award for Superior Service in Gang Prevention as well as in Canada the Solicitor General Crime Prevention and Community Safety Award of Excellence in recognition of her contribution and commitment to crime prevention and community safety. Registration for the symposium is $30 per adult and $15 for students (including college and university students) which includes refreshments.
