Calendar

The Board of Education of School District No. 42 approved a recommendation for a 2011-2012 school year calendar that will include a two-week Spring Break in March 2012 and an additional non instructional day in November 2011. The school day will be lengthened by approximately 10 minutes in order to compensate for the six additional holidays. The Board made the decision after considering five different options. Prior to the decision, all parents in the district had been invited to provide input via an online survey, and by attending an information meeting on march 29. More than 1200 parents responded to the survey. The new calendar will enable the district to save $200,000 mostly from not having to pay staff replacement costs when schools are not in session and from reduced heating and transportation costs during those periods. Regular district staff will not lose pay as a result of the new calendar. The new calendar will also mean common start and stop times for all schools; currently some schools have adjusted their schedules in order to dismiss early on Fridays. This practice has led to some inefficiencies.
