Regular Student Transportation 2016/17

The deadline for Regular Student Transportation registration is July 31, 2016  *

At its regular public meeting on Wednesday, June 15, 2016, the Maple Ridge – Pitt Meadows Board of Education approved a one-year regular student transportation model pilot.

This new model is based on the recommendations the board received from parents of students who use regular student transportation, who had requested the board reverse its decision to discontinue regular student busing effective September 2016.

Trustees will consider this budget change for ongoing funding during the 2017/18 budget process. Additional information about this pilot is below.

Eligibility Criteria

The eligibility criteria for the pilot are as follows:

PRIMARY STUDENTS (Grades K-3) and their siblings attending the same school who live farther than 4 kilometers from their catchment area school.
ALL OTHER STUDENTS (Grades 4-12) who live farther than 4.8 kilometers from their catchment area school.

Transportation services will not be provided to students who do not qualify for regular student transportation under the district eligibility criteria.

Application Process

Eligible students must register for regular student transportation by July 31, 2016. The school district cannot guarantee regular bus service for students who miss the July 31, 2016 deadline. Parent portal registration for regular student transportation opens at noon on Friday, June 17, 2016.

Cost

The annual regular student transportation fee has been set to mirror the cost of TransLink fares. The annual transportation fee per student is $416. There are no reduced family rates.

Families who are experiencing financial hardship but do not qualify under the district hardship policy can contact the transportation department at 604.466.6236 to make alternate payment arrangements.

Payment or alternate payment arrangements must be made by August 19, 2016.

Hardship Policy

In accordance with Board policy, low income families can apply for a transportation fee waiver.

What are the eligibility criteria?

Distance Criteria

PRIMARY STUDENTS (Grades K-3) and their siblings attending the same school who live farther than 4 kilometers from their catchment area school.

ALL OTHER STUDENTS (Grades 4-12) who live farther than 4.8 kilometers from their catchment area school.

Do all bus riders need to be registered every year?

Yes, all riders from kindergarten to Grade 12 need to register each year by the registration deadline. The deadline for 2016/17 is July 31, 2016.

When is payment due?

Once your application is approved, you will be notified to make payment. Payment will be due by no later than August 19, 2016.

What if I cannot afford the full payment?

The school district has a hardship policy and provides full fee waivers for families who meet the low income thresholds.

Families who do not qualify for the full fee waiver but are facing financial hardship can contact the transportation department at 604.466.6236 to make alternate payment arrangements.

What if I have one child in Grade 1 and one in Grade 6 and we live 4.2km away from the school they both attend? Would both children qualify?

Yes. Siblings of students who qualify under the eligibility criteria will also be deemed as eligible students. You must register both of your children by the July 31, 2016 registration deadline.

Is there a discount if a ride is not needed daily or only one way?

Because the annual amount of $416 ensures only partial recovery of transportation costs, the district cannot provide discounts for part-time use.

Can I sign my child up to ride the bus part way through the school year?

The district cannot guarantee a seat for children who are signed up after July 31, 2016. If a seat is available, the full fee of $416 would still apply.

If the bus service is no longer required, is there a refund?

The school district will only issue refunds if you discontinue the service before the end of the first week your child was scheduled to start receiving transportation service.

I live 3.5km away from the catchment school. Can my child ride the bus if there is room on the bus?
