The Bridge Program was designed by SD42 for students in Kindergarten to Grade 7 who are NOT attending school or attending only sporadically. Student Support Services and Child and Youth Mental Health work together with families to provide a wrap-around program to develop options and remove barriers so that the student can continue with a successful educational program.

Background

The Bridge Program is a new program that is going to include a partnership with Child and Youth Mental Health, Ministry for Children and Family Development and SD42 Student Support Services. This program will have a number of key benefits:

  • Students and parents will receive strategies for coping with their specific needs.
  • Students and parents will have an opportunity 1 - 2 times a week to practice skills both individually and in a group.
  • Groups will be small, relaxed and informal. They will be held in a safe, warm and welcoming environment.
  • An educational program will be in place to support student learning and to fill any needed areas of the curriculum
  • Opportunities will be provided for ongoing learning and for technological exploration and use.

Goal

The mutual goal to be achieved by students, parents, program leaders and the student's neighbourhood school is for a positive reintegration into school. It is a wrap-around program that needs participation and commitment from parents, who must engage in both the educational and the supportive components of the program.

Application Process

  1. Principals meet with families to share the opportunity of the Bridge Program and to provide parents with details about the program.
  2. Families can also set up a meeting to get additional information from Darci Gilmore (contact details below).
  3. Complete the referral form and return it to Darci Gilmore.
  4. Parents will then be contacted for an interview to see if the program is suitable for their family.
