The Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows Board of Education would like to engage its educational partners and general public in budget planning for the 2012-2013 Preliminary Budget.
Join us for a PUBLIC FEEDBACK FORUM on April 23, 2012 at 7 pm in the Suddaby Room (#2031-2034) at Thomas Haney Secondary School. Thomas Haney Secondary is located at 23000 - 116th Avenue, Maple Ridge. You may also offer your feedback in the comments section below.
We are inviting the partners, school communities and general public to consider the following:
- If the School District had additional funding, what areas would be a priority and provide details of your proposal?
- If the School District was in a position of declining revenue and needing to make changes, what areas would you consider a priority for reducing the current level of service and why?
- If you have any suggestions for efficiencies or cost savings, please provide your ideas and suggestions with details
Thank you for your time in providing the Board with your feedback and comments. This website will continue to have further information regarding the work the Budget Committee of the Whole over the coming days and months.

Speak up, trustees!
I hope that this board will start to speak out for the needs of the School District and advocate for the desperately needed increased funding. The current board's positon appears to be one that alligns with the priorities of the government in Victoria. That may serve the political needs of the majority of trustees but ignores those of thousans of children in School District 42. Time to speak, trustees!
Resources/Support
1. There needs to be increased funding for classroom teachers at the elementary level. Far too often they go without Science, Social Studies, Music, Art, L.A. or Math resources. It shouldn't be up to them to purchase it out of their own pocket. I would not expect them to purchase anything. They should be allowed to have access to art supplies, laminating, office supplies that aren't locked up and books. This creates a disparity between classrooms, between the teachers who can and cannot afford to run a classroom. And also between schools on how involved parents are which is unfair to children. 2. Increase the number of support teachers for students who struggle. Create separate classrooms for students who can't function in the classroom independently.
music education
I have five children in the Maple Ridge district at Albion Elementary and SRT. I was very disappointed that the elementary band program was cancelled. I was also very disappointed that there is no robust music program at SRT. Music is a critical learning tool. It keep children engaged and interested. Studies have shown that children who take music do better in their academics. Please find room for a reinstatement of music funding in our schools. Yours sincerely, Bob D'Eith rdeith[at]shaw.ca
Band and Music
I agree that the music program in this district should be given more priority. There is alot of evidence that music education improves brain development for improved academics in other areas. Also, music is not something every family can afford to teach at home. Band programs make music more affordable to average families.
Technology
Access for each student to computers, ipads, kindles etc varies from school to school. I would like to see funding go to equip each school. This should start with redefining one of the spaces which all students can access. The libraries and librarians must change with the times. Have this common space available with staff who can guide students through internet research, powerpoint presentation, checking out laptops, cameras etc. I would like to see library hours extend to 5pm. To facilitate this perhaps they should open later, the Teacher/Computer Tech can take breaks at different times than students, so the space will be available when students are not in class. Perhaps even a split shift with the space open before school hours as well. This would be of the most benefit to students and we need to put students first.
